Desc: | The seminar will address a range metaphysical topics including ontological categories, modality, essences and universals, powers, causation, and the status of conscious minds. The aim is to ascertain the role of metaphysical reflection in our attempts to come to terms with the universe as we find it. A unifying theme is the relation the appearances bear to reality as characterized by the sciences, especially physics and the relative merits of 'Humean' and 'Aristotelian' cosmologies in illuminating this relation.
Prerequisite: Enrollment in Philosophy or PNP Phd program, or permission of the instructor. |
